چکیده

In this work first we consider a physiologically structured population model with a distributed recruitment process. That is, our model allows newly recruited individuals to enter the population at all possible individual states, in principle. The model can be naturally formulated as a first order partial integro-differential equation, and it has been studied extensively. In particular, it is well-posed on the biologically relevant state space of Lebesgue integrable functions. We also formulate a delayed integral equation (renewal equation) for the distributed birth rate of the population. We aim to illustrate the connection between the partial integro-differential and the delayed integral equation formulation of the model utilising a recent spectral theoretic result. In particular, we consider the equivalence of the steady state problems in the two different formulations, which then leads us to characterise irreducibility of the semigroup governing the linear partial integro-differential equation. Furthermore, using the method of characteristics, we investigate the connection between the time dependent problems. In particular, we prove that any (non-negative) solution of the delayed integral equation determines a (non-negative) solution of the partial differential equation and vice versa. The results obtained for the particular distributed states at birth model then lead us to present some very general results, which establish the equivalence between a general class of partial differential and delay equation, modelling physiologically structured populations. 1. Prologue Structured population models are of great interest both from the mathematical and the application point of view. Traditionally they have been formulated as partial differential equations (PDEs for short) often with non-local (and nonlinear) boundary conditions. The early monograph [41] provided a comprehensive mathematical treatment of nonlinear age-structured population dynamics; while [12] provides valuable insight into the modelling and analysis of size-structured populations, which is accessible for theoretical biologists alike. We also refer the interested reader to the “green book” [37], which provides a systematic introduction to structured population models. Stability of Integral Delay Equations and Stabilization of Age-Structured Models

We present bounded dynamic (but observer-free) output feedback laws that achieve global stabilization of equilibrium profiles of the partial differential equation (PDE) model of a simplified, age-structured chemostat model. The chemostat PDE state is positive-valued, which means that our global stabilization is established in the positive orthant of a particular function space—a rather non-stan...

Control of Delay-ODE, Delay-PDE, and PDE-ODE Cascades

I. INTRODUCTION Delay systems occupy a special place within the field of distributed parameter systems. Certain problems for this class of distributed parameter systems lend themselves to more elegant, or even explicit solutions. An enormous wealth of knowledge and research results exists for control of systems with state delays and input delays. Problems with long input delays, for unstable pl...

Genetic Differentiation of Draa Indigenous Breed and Relationships with Other Goat Populations Assessed by Microsatellite DNA Markers

Moroccan goats are characterized by the presence of different populations identified only based on their phenotypes. The objectives of this study were to assess the genetic differentiation of the Draa goat breed and to analyze its genetic structure and its relationships with other local populations using 12 microsatellite markers. The screening was done in South Eastern and Southern Morocco on ...

Dynamic aspects of delay activity

The population density equation (PDE) has generated considerable interest, recently. The PDE allows e.cient simulation of populations with a large number of neurons. We apply the PDE to an existing model of delay activity, which produces stationary 1ring rates for delay assemblies. In order to observe transient phenomena, we apply the PDE to this model. Here we present the preliminary results. ...

On the net reproduction rate of continuous structured populations with distributed states at birth

We consider a nonlinear structured population model with a distributed recruitment term. The question of the existence of non-trivial steady states can be treated (at least!) in three different ways. One approach is to study spectral properties of a parametrized family of unbounded operators. The alternative approach, on which we focus here, is based on the reformulation of the problem as an in...
